It was founded as early as the 1570s. Since 1997, the Coin Cabinet has been located in a representative building in the centre of Stockholm’s old town. However it is now at the risk of being closed. The exhibitions are already taken down. During autumn 2020, the Royal Coin Cabinet were open there new premises at Narvavägen 13-17 in Stockholm – in the same building as the Swedish History Museum. The museum’s collections consist of approximately 650 000 objects, including one of the world’s first coins, the first banknotes and the heavy tin coins, which are the world’s largest coins.

It stretches east from the Stockholm Cathedral and the Royal Palace down to the street Skeppsbron which passes along the eastern waterfront of the old town.
